Night, Sawyer Harbor gouache 16.5 x 19.8 cm (6.5" x 7.75")
This is third painting of Sawyer Harbour, Wisconsin, that I've done. The other two were posted on September 3rd and August 23rd. Except for the streaky sky, I quite like this one. It was done from memory.
Blue Sheet charcoal and pastel 30.5 x 45.7 cm (12" x 18")
This drawing started out as an impressionistic study without much attention to detail. It end up much tighter and with more detail than originally intended. This was largely due to having more time to do the drawing than I initially thought that I would have. Rather than quitting early when the drawing was at its' best, I filled up the time adding detail without paying too much attention to what I was doing. The result is far from brilliant. The head, in particular, is not terribly well observed.
Heat charcoal and pastel 22.9 x 30.5 cm (9" x 12")
Heatrefers to the parabolic heater beside the model. It's beginning to cool off at night here in Winnipeg. It's time, once again, to begin providing some heat for our models.
Scanning this drawing proved frustrating. I was not able to get a faithful colour representation with the scan, nor was I able to adjust the colour to match the original drawing. While what you see is acceptable, the actual drawing has a more interesting colour constrast than the scan. Digital images of a drawing can sometimes be stronger than the original drawing, and sometimes, not.
Clip-on Lamp graphite, ink, charcoal, and pastel 29.8 x 21.6 cm (11.75" x 8.5")
The model might look slightly disinterested. He wasn't. It's the drawing. This was a twenty minute drawing, and there just wasn't time to do more with the face.
Heart charcoal and pastel 43.2 x 35.6 cm (17" x 14")
The title comes from a heart with wings that the model had tattooed on her chest.
Some of the right side of drawing was lost in scanning it. More of the model's left arm and hand are visible in the actual drawing.
I don't mind the overall drawing, although I don't particularly like the way I've coloured the model's body and the chair; and the drawing probably would have been stronger if the entire body had been included.
Michigan Shore gouache 16.5 x 19.8 cm (6.5" x 7.75")■
This is part of the Lake Michigan shoreline at Whitefish Dunes State Park in Wisconsin. Besides this rocky shore there are some good beaches in the park.
Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota oil 16.5 x 19.8 cm (6.5" x 7.75")
I might have got carried away doing this painting. It was a dark night, but maybe not this dark.
The view is looking across a bay in the southeast corner of Mille Lacs Lake.
This is far from my favourite painting. There's something about the black trees against an ultramarine sky which does nothing for me. It reminds me too much of Maxfield Parrish (who I have nothing against, except that I find his work hard to look at for more than a few minutes).
Below is another post of the same painting. This one includes the board on which the painting was done.
Shaved Head No.2 graphite, ink, and gouache 30.5 x 27.1 cm (12" x 10.7")
This is an older work. It was done on cardboard. The cardboard does provide some colour, and a contrast for the gouache. It's not exactly acid free, however.
The model was very pale, although not as ghostly as the drawing suggests. She was holding onto a strap hanging from above her head. The back drop was a dirty white to one side, and black to the other, with an interesting cast shadow.
The original Shaved Head was posted on March 8, 2007.
I had planned on posting another painting today, but the painting didn't work out. I searched around and found an old cartoon that I had done for my own amusement. It's not that funny, but maybe that's why I'm not a cartoonist.
This is the second version of Sawyer Harbour. This one is in oil, the first was a gouache, and this one includes one of the islands in the harbour which I left out of the gouache.
The island bothers me in this painting. It is too much the centre of attention. It might be better if it were off to one side, which leads me to think that there might be a third version coming.
Road, Wisconsin gouache 16.5 x 19.8 cm (6.5" x 7.75")
This road is in Door County, Wisconsin, north of Sturgeon Bay, where I recently spent some time cycling. It is great country for cycling. Quiet paved roads, either through gently rolling countryside, or along Green Bay or Lake Michigan.
This painting was done on a light weight paper, which warps with the water from the painting. You can see some evidence of the warping in the scan.
